„Business Opportunities for Women” – co - financed by UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) and CIDA (Canadian Agency for International Development), June – November 2003

Goal

To raise the level of women’s involvement in entrepreneurial activity of Iasi city

Target group

40 women willing to start a small business
40 women to become self -employee

Objectives

To support women in starting and developing their own business in order to contribute to economic development of local comunity
to encourage the small entrepreneurship for women in different jobs required by the present trend of the labour market (obtaining the authorization for individual activities/ self employment)
to contribute to the implementation of the Action Plan for Sustainable Development for Iasi in order to improve the business sector and to raise the economic status of the citizens

Obtained Results

70 % of the women gained the abilities and the techniques for starting a their own business business
designing a local plan to suport business women in Iasi comunity
a brochure containing all the necessary information for staring a business has been edited

Culture and Education – Poll Opinion in Tatarasi - financed by Pro Helvetia – Swiss Cultural Programme Romania, July - August 2003

Goal

Identifying the local priorities in Iasi city and Tatarasi district especially, related to information, education and citizens participation to the cultural activities, in order to raise their personal development and their contribution to the community development and to the quality of life.

Activities

Organizing 3 focus groups of 8 – 10 persons from Tătăraşi district
Conducting an oppinion poll on 400 persons living in Tatarasi district
Realising a research related to culture and education needs for people

Obtained Results

organising a meeting at Iaşi City Hall including Vice Mayor Gheorghe Nechita, representatives of Pro Helvetia and various non-governamental organisations. The aim of the meeting targets the setting of a collaboration pertnership regarding cultural-based activities in Tătăraşi district.

creating of a partnership between Vector Association, Romanian Coreographical Foundation and Pro WOMEN Foundation in order to realise a long term cultural project in Tătăraşi district, supported by Pro Helvetia

Objectives

Help and training for women activists from disadvantaged regions of Europe (especially in the East) to start and run projects leading to empowerment and requalification for unemployed women.
Exchange of know-how, experience and information on women projects and policies around Europe related to women’s unemployment and work-related discrimination, opportunities of learning and requalification as well as development of new learning strategies.
Visits of different women’s projects and mutual exchanges focused on practical learning.
Promotion of effective strategies to combat women’s unemployment and discrimination, raising public awareness on these issues.
Network & partnership building and promoting discussion and cooperation among partner organisations on the local and European level.

Between 17 September 2003 and 20 September 2003, an international workshop took place in Great Yarmouth, UK as one of the first planned activity of the project. The seminar ‘WOMEN IN MARGINAL AREAS – WOMEN IN PRECARIOUS ECONOMIES’ gathered women from 11 countries: Great Britain, Romania, Czech Republic and Lithuania, as partners within the project along with guests from Albania, Germany, Latvia, Belgium, Finland, Poland and Spain.

The seminar was focused on four major topics:

WOMEN & THE LABOUR MARKET - Analysis of the local situation & common points with our local realities & relation to the global economy causing the similar situation in various European countries. Are the women in poor areas even poorer than men? Quality of family life in relation to poverty. Home based precarious & informal work. Issue of basic skills. Unemployment and social exclusion. Seasonal work. Women entrepreneurs in poor areas.
WOMEN OF ETHNIC MINORITIES IN SMALL TOWNS - Difference between the life of migrant and refugee women in cities and small regional towns or villages. Problems they face. Relationship with the local community. Projects on racial equality.
WOMEN MAKING CONNECTIONS - Introduction of local project on community building, support and empowerment of women. Presentations of the other European projects. Strategies for networking and an effective co-operation on the ECG international level.
WOMEN SUPPORT WOMEN - How we can link local action with the global responsibility. How we can support women working in garment industry under unbearable conditions in other countries. Sweatshops in Europe. Clean Clothes Campaign.


Between 4th and 8th February an evaluation and planning meeting took place in Prague,  Czech Republic. There were 10 participants from 5 countries and the aims of the meeting were to do a short evaluation of the activities developed so far and also to plan the seminar to be organized in Iasi by the end of the June.

Apart from planning end evaluating, the participants also acquired and practiced new icebreaking methods and tools for group leading, chairing workshops and facilitating discussionc

An international workshop “Women’s learning and practice on the labour market” was organized in Iasi, Romania between 30th June and 6th July 2004 as a second workshop in the frame of the W&W Net.
The aims were:
to learn about the women’s projects and organisations in Romania
find out more information about women from disadvantaged rural regions
exchange experience on strategies of combating women’s discrimination on the labour market
get training on evaluation and emancipatory research
make new contacts and links to women’s project in Serbia and Republic of Moldova
discuss daily working problems, be together and empower each other.

25 women from Czech Republic, Lithuania, Moldavia, Romania, Serbia and UK participated in the seminar. The main organiser was Pro WOMEN foundation Romania with a support of the European Contact Group in the Czech Republic.

Developed activities

22 - 26 September 2004, Prague, Czech Republic (organizer – European Contact Group, 9 participants) – Evaluation and planning meeting. It was assessed Iasi workshop and it was established the agenda for the next meeting from Vilnius, Lithuania. There have been analyzed the needs related to the project, based on an evaluation of what had been done so far.

1 – 5 December 2004, Vilnius, Lithuania (organizer – Solidarumas Lithuania ,30 participants) - Training workshop. The idea of this workshop was to become aware about the women’s situation on the Lithuanian labour market, especially those working in the informal economy, such as home based workers, and to conduct training for a group of Lithuanian home based workers. The training was provided by the project team and included element of planning and organizational development, as well of communication


25 – 28 February 2005, Trutnov, Cehia (organizer – Bridge to Life, 10 participants) – Evaluation and planning meeting. The meeting aimed to plan the last project’s meeting to take place in Great Yarmouth, Great Britain, as well for decide on the final materials of the network and follow-up strategies

7 – 13 July 2005, Great Yarmouth, Great Britain (organizer – Community Connections, 11 participants) – Final meeting. 2 years of project activities were evaluated and were discussed the possibilities of project follow up.

Anti Discrimination Campaign (ADC), financed by IREX, June – August 2004

Goal 

To raise the citizens’ awareness on the discrimination phenomenon, especially on the labor market

Main objectives

Conducting a local campaign in order to promote the principle of nondiscrimination and equality on the labor market between women and men
Designing and organizing trainings for employees and trade union leaders for discrimination issues, existing regulations, compliance, etc.
Raising the level of information and support for working women or women looking for a job in order to have an equal treatment in their professional lives

Activities
providing local radio spots for antidiscrimination awareness purpose through one of the most popular local radio station
providing local TV spots for antidiscrimination awareness purpose within two of the most popular local TV stations - part of national TV networks
help line for information and counseling in discrimination issues
training within local companies : 12 women – representatives of local authorities- trained by Pro WOMEN as gender facilitators and trainers within EGAL project financed by SOROS Foundation in 2002 will do these trainings within 15 local companies (at least 300 managers, board persons and employee)
designing and distributing informative materials: flyers and leaf-lets for unemployed women looking for a job ( 500 women will receive these information) containing information on discrimination ; editing and distributing the sociological survey that has been done to the local companies( at least 200 pieces); 3 banners for phone line announcement
organizing a local march against discrimination ( Pro WOMEN staff and volunteers, partners, clients and collaborators).

ILSA – follow – up, Equal Chances on the Labour Market from Iasi, sociological research, September 2003 – January 2004

Activities

Conducting an opinion poll in Iasi city on worker's opinion on discrimination on the labour market (600 subjects)
Sociological interviews with managers of the most important local companies regarding their policies on equal chances on the labour market
Organising a meeting in partnership with the Local Department of Unemployment; participants will be managers, other NGO who developed projects on the labour market and also mass-media. The meeting will present the results of the opinion pool and will discuss the local strategy for dealing with and especially those at a high social risk.
Sending the conclusions to many enterprises at the local level

Obtained results

Disemination of the survey for many country NGO’s and to many specialists
Publishing an article in Capital magazine no. 16 from 14 of April 2004

Youth and European Integration (TIE), financed by EU, Europe Fund 2004 program, 15 November 2004 – 15 August 2005

Aim

Raising the degree of information and understanding on EU related issues and Romania’s EU integration for high school teens in Iasi, Vaslui, Neamt and Botosani counties.

- Training EuroDEBATE students on European affairs and debate technique
- General information on European Union; the club’s members distributed over 8000 of leaflets containing general information on EU, titled “What you SHOULD KNOW about EU?”
- Demo debates of EuroDEBATE clubs on the following topics: EU tends to eliminate the national identity, Education in immigrant’s mother tongue has the effect of their social exclusion, The free movement of workers in EU may involve misbalances on the labor market

cARTier, financed by Swiss Cultural Programme, PARTNERS: Vector Cultural Association, The City Council of Iasi, local partners in the district of Tatarasi, January – April 2004 (preparing the project period). Pro WOMEN Foundation played the role of the coach

In this period the coaching agency assisted Vector team in preparing the project and ensuring a collaboration frame with Iasi City Hall, Tatarasi Athenaeum and the groups of initiative fromTatarasi neighbourhood

To create a community cultural space in Tatarasi, as a place for rebuilding social relationships and recreating public space.
